If you’re installing solar panels or a heat pump, DNO approval is a must.

But what is the DNO? Why do you need their permission? And how does EcoGlow handle it for you? Let’s break it down.

What’s Involved in My Survey?

What Is the DNO?

DNO stands for Distribution Network Operator — the company that owns and operates the electricity infrastructure in your area (cables, substations, transformers).

There are 6 main DNO regions in the UK, including UK Power Networks, Western Power Distribution, and Northern Powergrid.

The DNO is not your electricity supplier — but they control whether new energy-generating or high-load devices (like solar PV or heat pumps) can connect safely to the grid.

When Do You Need DNO Approval?

Scenario

Approval Needed?

Installing Solar PV (3.6kW+) Yes — G99 or G98 submission
Adding Battery Storage Usually  especially if exporting to grid
Installing Heat Pump Yes — due to high starting current
Just changing appliances Not usually, unless load changes drastically

We Handle All DNO Submissions

What’s the Process?

  1. We complete a G98 or G99 application
    • G98 = small-scale, often after install
    • G99 = larger systems or export  must be pre-approved
  2. DNO assesses the system’s impact on the grid
    • May request additional info (e.g., inverter spec, site maps)
  3. Approval returned in 1–4 weeks
    • We track this and coordinate your go-live date
  4. You receive formal documentation
    • Often required for SEG payments and legal compliance

What Happens If You Don’t Get DNO Approval?

                  • Your system may not be legally connected
                  • You may not be allowed to export energy
                  • SEG payments may be withheld
                  • You risk voiding your warranty or insurance

Will DNO approval delay my install?

Sometimes — G99 approvals can take up to 4 weeks. We apply early.

Do I need to talk to the DNO myself?

No. EcoGlow handles it entirely for you.

Can I still get SEG payments without DNO?

No. MCS + DNO documentation are required to register with SEG suppliers.
