What Is the DNO?
DNO stands for Distribution Network Operator — the company that owns and operates the electricity infrastructure in your area (cables, substations, transformers).
There are 6 main DNO regions in the UK, including UK Power Networks, Western Power Distribution, and Northern Powergrid.
The DNO is not your electricity supplier — but they control whether new energy-generating or high-load devices (like solar PV or heat pumps) can connect safely to the grid.
When Do You Need DNO Approval?

What’s the Process?
- We complete a G98 or G99 application
- G98 = Small-scale systems, often submitted after installation
- G99 = Larger systems or export-capable systems that must be approved before installation
- DNO assesses the system’s impact on the grid
- May request additional info (e.g., inverter spec, site maps)
- Approval returned in 1–4 weeks
- We track this and coordinate your go-live date
- You receive formal documentation
- Often required for SEG payments and legal compliance
What Happens If You Don’t Get DNO Approval?
- Your system may not be legally connected to the electricity network
- You may not be permitted to export excess energy back to the grid
- Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) payments could be withheld
- You may risk invalidating your warranty or insurance coverage
