What Is the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)?
The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is a government-backed scheme that pays you for the electricity your solar panels send back to the grid.
If your home generates more energy than it uses — especially with solar PV and battery storage — that surplus isn’t wasted. It’s sold.
And under SEG, you get paid for every unit you export.

How It Works
- Install Solar PV (MCS-Certified)
Your solar panels must be installed by an MCS-accredited provider — EcoGlow handles this.
- Have a Smart Export Meter
You’ll need a smart meter (or export meter) that tracks what you feed into the grid. We’ll check and help you install one if needed.
- Choose a SEG Tariff
You can pick a supplier offering a SEG tariff. Rates vary — from 1p to 20p per kWh.
You’re not required to sell to your electricity provider — you can choose the best-paying supplier.

Example: Real-World SEG Earnings
| System Size | Annual Export | SEG Income (5p–15p/kWh) |
| 3.5kW Solar | ~1,200 kWh | £60–£180/year |
| 6.0kW Solar | ~1,800 kWh | £90–£270/year |
| 6.0kW + Battery | ~2,000 kWh | £100–£300/year |

SEG vs Feed-in Tariff (FiT)
- FiT was the old scheme (closed to new applicants in 2019)
- SEG is the replacement
- No fixed rates — you pick the best tariff
- Exported energy is now tracked per unit, so you only earn for what you don’t use

Why It Matters for Sustainability
Even when you’re not home, your solar system keeps working — reducing fossil fuel demand on the grid and helping decarbonize UK electricity.
Every kilowatt you send to the grid:
- Offsets dirty energy
- Earns you passive income
- Supports national net-zero targets

Do I have to use EcoGlow’s SEG tariff?
No — we don’t supply energy. You choose the best rate.
Can I still use batteries?
Absolutely — but SEG only pays for exported power (not stored).
Do I get paid for what I use?
No — SEG only pays for excess energy you export.
